Welcome to week 13 of Photography Friday. Photography Friday is a 20 week challenge to help improve our photography skills. There is a weekly prompt / theme for each week that you can be as creative with it as you'd like. This week's theme is food and next week's theme is black and white. For further information please click here. Last's weeks theme was 'anything goes' and apparently for me (while on vacation) anything meant nothing. If you had a post ready for last week please feel free to link up with both posts this week.

Food
Let's talk a little bit about food in Hawaii. Everyone told me that the number one thing I had to get was shaved ice with ice cream. I'm here to tell you I did not do that and I'm still alive and breathing. We were going to get the shaved ice / ice cream but I spotted a Brazilian food truck and opted for that instead. When I say I spotted a Brazilian food truck I'm here to tell you that while Dave was driving I saw a large picture of a coxinha and screamed out "DAVE! A BRAZILIAN FOOD TRUCK AND THEY SELL COXINHAS! I NEED ONE!" I'm calm like that...
We did have shaved ice after hiking Diamond Head. We were hot and I was hungry and shaved ice hit the spot! We also had ice-cream at the Dole Plantation. It was good but I think Braum's is better. =) If you don't live in the mid-west you probably don't know what Braum's is and I feel sad for you.
On the Big Island we went to Cafe100 who is famous for their Loco Moco. It's rice, a hamburger patty slathered in gravy with an egg on top. Apparently they sell about 9,000 of those a month! I opted for rice, gravy, Portuguese sausage and an egg. It was pretty good but I wouldn't eat that all the time because I'm sure that little bowl has a zillion calories in it. The atmosphere at the restaurant was fun. You just order from the window and they have tables outside where you can eat.
Soda! I'm not a big soda drinker but the Brazilian food truck on the North shore of Oahu had Guarana - a classic Brazilian soda. I also found some passion fruit soda make locally in Hawaii by a company called Waialua Soda. It was pretty good too and, once again, I grew up drinking passion fruit juice in Brazil.
The other aspect of food in Hawaii that I loved was the fresh fruit. We stayed at small condos or rented out part of someone's house for our stay and we ate breakfast there to cut cost on eating out. Things in Hawaii are super expensive but fruits native to Hawaii are very reasonably priced. This is a plate of papaya and apple bananas. I'm not a big fan of bananas but apple bananas are denser and sweeter and I like them. I ate this same food in Brazil a lot too. I'm now realizing that half the food I ate in Hawaii was what I grew up eating. Funny how that worked out. I also had some fresh pressed sugar cane juice which if you never had, please, have some in your lifetime! You won't regret it.
After eating all of these fruits I was reminded that I love tropical fruits best. My favorites are papaya, mango, limes, and coconut. I'd pick those any day over an apple or grapes.
What's your favorite food? Do you like tropical fruits? Have you tried any Brazilian foods?

ReplyDeleteNo worries, girl! You are in the middle of packing and moving =) Hope you get some pineapple soon.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Chelsea! It was fun.
ReplyDelete=) and it sure was.
ReplyDeleteI love the colors too!
ReplyDeleteBraum's?? Really? Of all American ice cream shops - you like Braum's? But those fruits look delicious! And you can get shaved ice with ice cream in the continental U.S. so I don't know if that's a big deal.
ReplyDeleteWait? I'm confused, you don't love Braum's? I've never met a single person who didn't love Braum's. Waffle cone with cookies and cream is a favorite! I'm not big on the frozen yogurt so maybe that is why I love Braum's. I have seen shaved ice places other places so I'm not too worried.
ReplyDeleteIt's not that I don't like Braum's... I'm just saying there are millions of more amazing ice cream places around - like Coldstone or Maggie Moo's or Ben & Jerry's - I feel like Braum's is just a compromise if there's nothing better. I'd even choose Dairy Queen over Braum's!
ReplyDeleteYUM!!!
